Open Casting Call for Tom Hanks Movie “You Are My Friend” in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh PA – Be a movie extra.

Tom Hanks is filming a new movie in Pittsburgh and an open casting call is coming up this weekend.

The movie is a biopic of Mr. Rogers and is currently being called “You Are My Friend,” the Mr. Rogers flick which stars Tom Hanks is looking for area locals who would like to work as paid movie extras in the Pittsburgh, PA area where the movie will be filming.

From “The Americans,” Matthew Rhys will be co-starring in the film. Variety reported that Rhys was in talks to co-star with Tom Hanks some time back and that TriStar is behind the film.   Rhys has finished up his run on the critically acclaimed TV series “The Americans” which landed him 3 consecutive award nominations.  Also according to Variety, Marielle Heller will be directing the movie from a script written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

A few days back, Variety reported that the film has now also cast Chris Cooper to play Rhys’ father in the film.

It is said that the movie is based on the true story of Fred Rogers and his friendship with award-winning journalist Tom Junod (played by Rhys). The story is about a journalist who is assigned to write a piece about Mr. Rogers and finds his life transformed in the process.  Currently, the release date seems to be set in mid October of 2019 and is expected to be an award candidate that year.

Big Beach Films with Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf are named as the producers for the project, per Variety.

An open casting call is scheduled in Pittsburgh from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

According to the local casting call, All ages and ethnicities are needed for the film and those interested may stop by the open casting call to tryout to be in the movie. According to YDR,

The extras will be playing a variety of parts including New York and Pittsburgh pedestrians, ballroom party guests, journalists, business types, wedding guests, bar and restaurant patrons, hospital staff, and audience members.

The hours for the open casting call will be 9AM to 4PM.

Does not seem that any appointments are necessary as the open casting call is being held at a convention center.  Those attending will probably need to bring their ID with them as they will most likely have to fill out employment paperwork.
